Ballot Scanner consists of a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) laptop and scanner:
An HP Elitebook 840 G6 Laptop with the VotingWorks Ballot Scanner software pre-installed.
A Fujitsu fi-7160 Scanner to scan ballots in batch.
VotingWorks also provides a backup laptop and scanner. Like the Election Manager, the Ballot Scanner laptop, USB drive, and required cables are stored in an Apache 4800 Case and delivered with backup hardware components.
Ballot Scanner comes plug-and-play and can be set up through the following steps:
Unbox Laptop: remove the laptop from the case and plug in the included charger to the laptop and outlet.
Unbox Scanner: remove the scanner from the box and plug in the included power cord to the scanner and outlet.
Connect Laptop to Scanner: Use the provided USB cable in the scanner box to connect the laptop to the scanner.
Turn on Laptop: Turn on the laptop using the power button in the top-left of keyboard. The Ballot Scanner does not require any authentication and will boot directly into the Ballot Scanner app.
Turn on Scanner: Turn on the scanner using the front power button.
